“It’s so much more than that. It’s a state of mind. It’s an approach to a problem. It’s how you’re going to kick your competitor’s ass.”
Companies like Apple are making design impossible for startups to ignore. Startups like Path, Airbnb, Square, and Massive Health have design at the core of their business, and they’re doing phenomenal work. But what is ‘design’ actually?…
A well executed guide for non-designers by Wells Riley
I will be busy bringing design thinking and methods to business professionals, students and architects this spring… On the photo you see me at a recent Design Thinking workshop for Tre-for the local energy company, I helped facilitate earlier this year (more flicks here).
I have a lot of similar stuff lined up this spring. Tomorrow is the first day of a course I am teaching with my former partner and now phd student Jesper at Roskilde University on Design methods and visualization running for 5 days over the next 2 month. The day after it’s user driven design methods and insights from the etrans project for business contacts of Trekantområdet. Then in the middle of april I will co-facilitate a 2 day workshop on prototyping for business developers from DONG Energy - and to end it of by the end of may I am heading a 3 day postgraduate course in workshop methods as part the Danish Architects’ Associations continuing professional Development program.
So in between the ongoing projects and activities at etrans it looks like a pretty busy - but exciting spring.
Within my field of interest: Design, Ideas, Innovation.. thinking and doing.
At etrans we recently launched an open competition looking for app ideas that can make the electric car smarter, safer and more fun.
One of the strategic areas I have had my focus on since I started as innovation consultant at etrans was ‘Smart Data’, investigating how the intelligent e-cars can become more attractive than the gasoline driven ones by looking into the possibilities when combining the e-car with traffic data, navigation, wifi, smart phones etc.
The competition appsogelbiler.dk (apps & ecars) is rewarding the 3 best ideas in 3 categories with 25.000 DKK - and before you click through let me just say it’s all in Danish (etrans is working to get the Danes to love the e-cas).
I am hoping we get a bunch of creative and innovative concepts before the 1st of december deadline that our very competent jury can evaluate. The jury consists of:
Henrik Werdelin, Managing Partner at Prehype with a background from MTV Intl. Joost and Hotpotato and specialized in innovation and digital startups and focusing on user experience
Morten Just, Interaction Designer at Google. Previously worked with Adobe, Vodaphone and ZYB and develops new quirky apps in his sparse free time.
Christiane Vejlø, Digital trend expert and editor at Electronista.dk after having worked for 10 years with innovation in broadcasting and telephone industry.
Bo Borbye Pedersen, myself, innovation consultant and sr. designer at etrans with a background in user centered design and innovation, etc…
Please help spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested - and can understand Danish!
About a month ago I helped facilitate aDesign Summit with the goal of collecting input to the next Danish design policy Design2020. I was asked to help out by the Danish Design Association and they now released the output in a ‘white paper’ for all (who can read Danish) to see.
The summit gathered 85 profiles representing design in Denmark: business, education, ministries, organizations etc. who discussed the 4 topics which were:
- Design as a growth engine
- Branding Danish Design
- Internationalization
- Education and research
the later one which I facilitated. See a few more shots at flickr.
Design Thinking has given the design profession and society at large all the benefits it has to offer and is beginning to ossify and actually do harm.
Bruce Nussbaum kills ‘Design Thinking’ which he helped define and promote for many years at Business Week. He says it time to move on to something new, which he defines as ‘Creative Intelligence’. He has some good points (and so does the 80+ commenters), but I can’t help feel that he is more motivated to sell his new book due out next year, than anything else.
Oh well, I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that these terms change. My main concern is that it makes it difficult to define what we do, for people (clients) who’s not so updated on all the design and innovation jargon.
“In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.”

The Oregon Manifest is a competition to design and build the ultimate moderne utility bike. Participants include design teams from IDEO, Fuse Project and Ziba. This will be interesting to follow. The whole thing goes down September 23-24.
I can still get amazed at the design of Dieter Rams. Here’s the Braun TP1 radio/phonograph from 1959. Have a look at it in use also.
New identity for the Danish Architects’ Association by Pleks. I like the work Mads and crew did for Arkitektforeningen
This looks nice! For everyone interested in interaction design and/or digital/sampler-based music check out these dope devices.
Great video and smart flip phone concept creating by Kristian Ulrich Larsen and a couple of fellow students from Designskolen Kolding. It was just mentioned over at Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club blog. Kristian also participated in the Design Camp this fall with the cool concept Dotdot.
Nice set of icons of modern design icons. Not sure who made these? Similar to this.
