Olafur Haraldsson made this truly awesome movie, illustrating rays of electricity over a speech by Nicola Tesla from 1893. All the pictures was shot of the beautiful landscape of Olafur’s native Iceland. The film was produced as part of the iPower project (sister project to etrans) as a way to raise awareness of our perception of electricity.

Currently writing on a collection of advice on how to work with change and transformation in complex systems, based on experience we have gained from the innovation challenges in the etrans project. Should be printed and publicly available during this fall. Stay tuned…

Currently working on 2 exciting service design challenges: How to make the experience of carsharing sharable for Letsgo - and how to make the charging experience better and greener for ChoosEV.

Today I taught 20 something business developers from DONG Energy about prototyping ideas in order to explore, test or communicate them more efficiently. Here’s a phone shot of some of the tools they could choose from. I was very impressed by the participants’ energy and work. + a pleasure to work with Mette (head of etrans) & Morten (from Experience Strategy).

Update: More photos from the 2 day workshop now online at etrans’ flickr

I will be busy bringing design thinking and methods to business professionals, students and architects this spring… On the photo you see me at a recent Design Thinking workshop for Tre-for the local energy company, I helped facilitate earlier this year (more flicks here).

I have a lot of similar stuff lined up this spring. Tomorrow is the first day of a course I am teaching with my former partner and now phd student Jesper at Roskilde University on Design methods and visualization running for 5 days over the next 2 month. The day after it’s user driven design methods and insights from the etrans project for business contacts of Trekantområdet. Then in the middle of april I will co-facilitate a 2 day workshop on prototyping for business developers from DONG Energy - and to end it of by the end of may I am heading a 3 day postgraduate course in workshop methods as part the Danish Architects’ Associations continuing professional Development program.

So in between the ongoing projects and activities at etrans it looks like a pretty busy - but exciting spring.

Forget all the speculation about range anxiety, batteries or price. With the rebirth of electric vehicles we’re giving the opportunity to think out of the box and reinvent the car from scratch, since you are not bound by the known physical bounderies limited by the heavy motors, exhaust or cooling systems.

“So says etrans, which together with a group of students from the Design school in Kolding returned from a five-week stay in China, where the Danes, together with students from Tongji University in Shanghai and Volkswagen the factory in Shanghai has worked on new solutions for the interior of the car.”

Recent double-page spread in national Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten on the design projects I framed and kickstarted in Shanghai this October. We just opened a new etrans exhibition this week, including these prototypes which can be seen until middle of April in Kolding.

A little video of the etrans, Designskolen Kolding and Tongji University collabo in Shanghai October 2011, and a teaser for the upcoming etrans event on December 15 where the resulting electric car service concepts and interior models will be on display.

At etrans we recently launched an open competition looking for app ideas that can make the electric car smarter, safer and more fun.

One of the strategic areas I have had my focus on since I started as innovation consultant at etrans was ‘Smart Data’, investigating how the intelligent e-cars can become more attractive than the gasoline driven ones by looking into the possibilities when combining the e-car with traffic data, navigation, wifi, smart phones etc.

The competition appsogelbiler.dk (apps & ecars) is rewarding the 3 best ideas in 3 categories with 25.000 DKK - and before you click through let me just say it’s all in Danish (etrans is working to get the Danes to love the e-cas).

I am hoping we get a bunch of creative and innovative concepts before the 1st of december deadline that our very competent jury can evaluate. The jury consists of:

Henrik Werdelin, Managing Partner at Prehype with a background from MTV Intl. Joost and Hotpotato and specialized in innovation and digital startups and focusing on user experience

Morten Just, Interaction Designer at Google. Previously worked with Adobe, Vodaphone and ZYB and develops new quirky apps in his sparse free time.

Christiane Vejlø, Digital trend expert and editor at Electronista.dk after having worked for 10 years with innovation in broadcasting and telephone industry.

Bo Borbye Pedersen, myself, innovation consultant and sr. designer at etrans with a background in user centered design and innovation, etc…

Please help spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested - and can understand Danish!

This pic shot today is from a small exhibition I have planned and coordinated at EBST (The Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority) in time for Copenhagen Design Week 2011 This morning I hooked up the last displays and made sure everything was up and running.

The exhibition is called ‘The Danes Must Learn to Love the Electric Car’ and features some of etrans main findings and 6 of our projects. Check the UK flyer for more info or view some more shots of the exhibition.

This video shows the BMW evolve app, which helps you figure out what impact an EV would have on your daily life. At etrans, one of our focus areas in our work in our effort to create an attractive infrastructure around the electric car is what I at one point called ‘Smart Data’. Basically that just means apps, an obvious area where the EVs has a born advantage as they are all intelligent and most of them online.

Currently we have a competition in the works which this as the main aim, but we are also looking at apps to race awareness about the EVs. We have made an edutainment app for DONG Energy (for children) and also had a  concept around creating a tamagothci like app, which would act as if you had a electric car and compare it to your current driving habits. But BMW beats us with the EVolve Mobile App, which is more or less the exact same concept. And I most say that BMW are really doing some cool stuff when it comes to the future of mobility (see earlier post).

Stumbled upon this while researching on apps in relation to one of our focus areas within etrans; Smart Apps. This infographic video displays Mobile Year in Review 2010 in very impressive stats (via mobilefuture.org).

I just watched the first 2 of 4 short documentaries that form the BMW sponsored Activate the Future of Mobility series. From Jet packs to EV’s to spaceships. The last 2 coming within the next week will cover ‘how technology will change mobility…’ and give ’ a look at things to come and a future of possibilities’

Great video and smart flip phone concept creating by Kristian Ulrich Larsen and a couple of fellow students from Designskolen Kolding. It was just mentioned over at Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club blog. Kristian also participated in the Design Camp this fall with the cool concept Dotdot.

Btw. etrans just published a report from the camp.

Above pic shows the dashboard of the Nissan Leaf. As part of my work at etrans, I am looking into how we can make the experience of the electric car better, more convenient and all around attractive. One of the potential areas we have identified and currently working with is what we have called ‘Smart Data’. App’s such as the

carwings feature implemented in the Leaf dash, which ranks the car and drivers ability to drive economically and awards the best with Gold or Platinum. And it seems like a feature some drives find fun and motivating.

Also of interest is that Ford has chosen to present their Ford Electric tomorrow at CES along side Consumer Electronics, instead of at the Detroit motor show the following week.
