Leap is definitely an interesting product, but I must admit that I am a bit sceptic about all this gesturing in the air. Interacting with the intangible air doesn’t seem super natural (Similar to what Bret Victor pointed out 6 month ago).
Will be interesting to see how this developes and we adopt.
Testing out the new Tictrac app with lets you collect, track and visualize your own private data. Pretty nice interface and experience, but it’s still in closed beta, and does not yet sync with enough services to make it relevant for me. Read more in this article in Wired
Another app got me excited; the Mattebox camera app designed and developed by Ben Syverson. If you care about well designed interfaces and photography I recommend to go check it out.
Now I need an upgrade from my 3GS iphone cam. When is the next one coming out?
Giving this new list app a spin. Not so much because I really need another todo app in my life, but the simplified and gesture based interface seems pretty sweet. Designed and developed by Impending, Milen and Realmac Software (second time I am buying and promoting an application by them). Looking forward to more of this…
Update Feb. 20: Article by Aynne Valencia and Alfred Lui from Fjord highlighting the interaction trends that the Clear app is representing.
A Brief Rant on the Future of Interaction Design
Can’t help but love stuff like this: a look into the future of how we’ll interact with computers, even though this concept by Microsoft doesn’t really bring any new ideas we haven’t seen before. The part of a future device where payment, phone, computer, ID etc. has merged to one is nothing new, but it’s still very interesting. It’s so logical, but still faces many real life obstacles. Also interesting to look at how we can make the fluent transitions work as well as it’s depicted here. Following above link leads you to Bret Victor who points out even more critical issues with this ‘vision’, especially in regards to our tactile experiences of how we interact with our surroundings, which are great and valid points.
I believe it was the same point that Marko Ahtisaari, design director of Nokia, was making when I heard him recently (introducing the N9) comparing our current interaction with smartphones to how we interacted with early cars which were controlled with a tiller for the first 20 years of existence.
But still, if you have a little bit of gadget freak in you and are interested in interaction design the video is worth your time.
I have (like most of you all) noticed the UI update that the Google design team is currently rolling out over their products and platform, timed with the launch of Google+, I guess.
I think the updated look and feel is a great improvement - and of course I like the use of icons. I am hoping they’ll also change the browser bar icon.
Another good reason for visiting NYC soon again: Talk to Me is an exhibition on the communication between people and objects that will open at The Museum of Modern Art on July 24th 2011. It will feature a wide range of objects from all over the world, from interfaces and products to diagrams, visualizations, perhaps even vehicles and furniture, by bonafide designers, students, scientists…
Beautiful little piece of software delivering a nice experience of uploading and sharing files! Courier for Mac. Very well done. I think this will be my first buy in the App Store (on my iMac).
