    Challenge Society

The other day I attended a one day conference at the Danish Design Center, which covered the (potential) role of design in a society, facing many challenges. I think it’s save to say that it’s the best event I have been to at the DDC*.

I am a big admirer of the work and form language of the brothers Bouroullec. Ronan is coming to Copenhagen next week to do a talk at the Danish Architecture Center about his approach to design and their collaboration with Vitra. Does any know if his communication skills are on level with his design work?

    RSA Animate: Changing Education Paradigms

Interesting and well animated talk by Sir Ken Robinson on the need to change or education system. I think we’re a little better here in welfare Denmark than the average american school, but still lots of food for thoughts in this. If you have 11:40 and care about how we shape the next generation.

I especially liked his point about the arts and the holistic and aesthetic experience vs. that of the anaesthetic approach of many schools.

About a year ago I had the privilege of attending the Copenhagen Co’Creation event/network along with Emily Pilloton from Project H Design, who’s doing some very inspiring work with design. Here she is at newly posted TED talking about ‘Teaching design for change’.

I documented the Copenhagen Co’creation weekend for DDA, so if you want to spot Emily or David Kester, Ric Grefé, Banny Banerjee, Lavrans Løvlie and other bright design related individuals go have a look at the set at my flickr stream.

The international Design Camp is running this week at Designskolen Kolding and today Michael Braungart from EPEA gave his inspirational Cradle to Cradle speak. By now I have heard it a couple of times, and the gospel is still the same. Still very inspiring message:

“I am not talking about sustainability. Sustainability is boring. You don’t call your relation with your girlfriend sustainable.

Let’s not talk about ethics. Let’s talk about design. Let’s talk about beauty. Let’s talk about quality.”

Afterwards Cordy Swope from Ideo gave a short talk on ‘behavior design’ and guided the following workshop on ‘New Ways of Transportation”

View a few more shots from the design camp.

I saw Christien Meindertsma when she received the Index Award in 2009 here in Copenhagen with this project PIG 06049, which tracks the ‘materials’ of a pig to no less than 185 different products! In 2 weeks she will be back in Denmark giving a talk at LynFabrikken and Republikken. Check it out if you have the time.
