I just stumbled upon Nest, a really well designed thermostat / climate control system, which learns your habits and routines and help you save energy. It has been developed by some of the smart folks who also helped form PalmOne, iPod, iPhone etc., headed by Tony Fadell, who you can hear talking about his experience in this 20 minute Q&A.

Leap is definitely an interesting product, but I must admit that I am a bit sceptic about all this gesturing in the air. Interacting with the intangible air doesn’t seem super natural (Similar to what  Bret Victor pointed out 6 month ago).

Will be interesting to see how this developes and we adopt.

For those who haven’t seen, Microsoft has released a new video detailing the thoughts and design behind Windows 8 — which, from the looks of it, promises to be a major milestone in the Windows line. By putting an emphasis on web applications, and integrating the beautifully minimal “Metro UI,” across their desktop and mobile products, it looks like Microsoft is really putting themselves back in the game.

I can’t remember seeing anything this impressive from Microsoft ever. Looks like they shared a few ideas with Claytons 10/GUI posted earlier

This video examines the benefits and limitations inherent in current mouse-based and window-oriented interfaces, the problems facing other potential solutions, and visualizes a proposal for a completely new way of interacting with desktop computers.

    There’s more information at 10gui.com .

I can still get amazed at the design of Dieter Rams. Here’s the Braun TP1 radio/phonograph from 1959. Have a look at it in use also.

This looks nice! For everyone interested in interaction design and/or digital/sampler-based music check out these dope devices.

Quite beautiful and thought provoking. Disassembled and photographed by Todd McLellan. Made me once again think about the Afterlife doc previously posted.

Great video and smart flip phone concept creating by Kristian Ulrich Larsen and a couple of fellow students from Designskolen Kolding. It was just mentioned over at Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club blog. Kristian also participated in the Design Camp this fall with the cool concept Dotdot.

Btw. etrans just published a report from the camp.

What a wonderful outdoor office with all the latest baby blue gear :-)

Above pic shows the dashboard of the Nissan Leaf. As part of my work at etrans, I am looking into how we can make the experience of the electric car better, more convenient and all around attractive. One of the potential areas we have identified and currently working with is what we have called ‘Smart Data’. App’s such as the

carwings feature implemented in the Leaf dash, which ranks the car and drivers ability to drive economically and awards the best with Gold or Platinum. And it seems like a feature some drives find fun and motivating.

Also of interest is that Ford has chosen to present their Ford Electric tomorrow at CES along side Consumer Electronics, instead of at the Detroit motor show the following week.

swisscheeseandbullets writes a nice post about why there’s no well functioning, affordable, good looking printers on the market today?

With Apple’s new iOS 4.2 they’ve introduced a little thing called AirPrint, which means you can wirelessly print straight from your iPhone or iPad. Sounds good, simple….

    Food for thought

Recently created by Colomn Five Media and posted at the usually fairly interesting Good magazine. Reminds me of the 5 year old documentary Afterlife I mentioned a while ago.

Some time ago I stumbled upon this beautiful poster by Matt Appleton depicting all the elements of an epson stylus photo 1270 ink jet printer and comparing it to a pencil. I found out that this is a poster was made in relation to a documentary investigating the impact of electronic waste on the global community which Matt made in 2005, when he was still a student at Royal College of Art.

You can download and watch the 10 minute film here. (hope it’s ok I share Matt?)
